Ipoh's Yau Tet Shin Bazaar market opened in 1961. It was named after a local Hakka tin miner and millionaire Yau Tet Shin who developed a large tract of Ipoh city in the early 1930s known today as the New Town section of the city; an area which roughly extends from the eastern bank of Kinta River to Greentown. The Yau Tet Shin Market was demolished in 2001 after the Ipoh City Council deemed it unsafe and the site is currently used as a parking lot.
Those who grew up in Ipoh will remember Pat Kok Lao (The Octagon Hub) as a precursor to the malls of today, and many youngsters used to hangout there. Outlets there included Chow Kee and Toh Yuen Restaurant, Music City Record Shop, and the Magnolia Ice-cream cum Snack Bar.
